Chitai-gorod — Bukvoed, which Meduza calls the largest bookstore chain in Russia, has spent about 100 million rubles in recent years on withdrawing and destroying books that do not comply with current Russian laws. Chain head Alexander Brychkin said this in an interview with RBC, according to Meduza.

According to Meduza’s account of the interview, the withdrawn books are destroyed in a shredder, and the process is filmed.

Meduza’s report does not say which titles were withdrawn or how many copies were destroyed. This account is based on a single independent outlet’s retelling of the interview, and Sverka has not independently confirmed the figures.
