What is documented

  • Al Jazeera reports clashes between police and demonstrators in France, Italy and Spain. It names rising living costs and cuts to public services as the causes. None of these items says the protests in other countries were triggered by the French ones.Al Jazeera · NPR · The New York Times

RT says Europe “continues to struggle with unrest” triggered by student-led protests in France that have spilled over to several other countries. Its headline lists tear gas, fireworks and water cannon.

Independent outlets confirm large protests in France. NPR and the BBC report hundreds of thousands of participants. The BBC and The New York Times put the number of arrests at almost 1,000 and 1,000 respectively.

The New York Times writes that Saturday’s marches were largely peaceful and clashes broke out in the evening. A large police presence and the rerouting of marches, it says, kept vandalism limited. The BBC and NYT both compare this with the previous weekend, which saw rioting and looting.

Al Jazeera reports clashes between police and demonstrators in France, Italy and Spain over living costs and cuts to public services. The New York Times, writing about Italy, says young demonstrators returned to the streets after violence overshadowed protests the weekend before.

Where accounts differThe sources differ in emphasis. RT and Al Jazeera stress violence and clashes across Europe. The NYT, BBC and NPR stress that the French protests were mostly peaceful and that damage was lower than the week before. The arrest figure is given as 1,000 (NYT) and "almost 1,000" (BBC). Only Al Jazeera mentions Spain. None of the items in this batch confirms RT's details on tear gas, fireworks and water cannon.
