Solzhenitsyn monument dismantled in Vladivostok, put back the next day

The monument had stood in the city centre since 2015. It was to be moved to a park for victims of political repression, but was reinstalled a day after removal.

On October 20, a monument to Alexander Solzhenitsyn was dismantled in central Vladivostok, where it had stood since 2015, Meduza reports. The plan was to move it to a park commemorating victims of political repression.

The next day the monument was unexpectedly put back in its original place. According to Meduza, the official explanation was that the sculpture was too large for the new site.

Meduza notes that Vladivostok has a particular link to the writer: in 1994, after 20 years in exile, Solzhenitsyn began his journey across Russia there.

The story rests on a single independent source. The item available to us does not say who ordered the dismantling or who gave the explanation, and no other outlet’s account has been confirmed.
